Nexium & Prilosec are drugs known as proton pump inhibitors and are used to treat acid reflux disease and heart burn.  They are also sometimes used in the treatment of acid-related damage to the lining of the esophagus, to reduce stomach ulcers, or to treat stomach infections.  These medications are available over-the-counter and are among the most widely used medications available.  However, people who use the drugs have experienced an increased risk of kidney damage, developing chronic kidney disease, and renal failure.
